History of Fairville Fire Department

apparatus

The Fairville Fire Department was established in 1956.  The first meeting was held on 22 Feb 1956 at the Fairville Hotel to decide whether the town would like to have a volunteer fire department.  On 05 Mar 1956, the Fairville Volunteer Fire Department held its first business meeting.  On 17 May 1956, the Fire Department received news from the state that they were incorporated.

Throughout the first year, the fire department acquired it’s first Fire Truck, which was bought from the Newark State School for $1.  It was an American LaFrance 500 gallon tanker truck.  The department also bought it’s first fire hall, which was the old Fairville School.

In the first year, the first fund-raiser was announced.  It would be a Clam Bake on Route 31, at the Sawyers Gulf Terminal on 28 Oct 1956.

Shortly after, the department purchased it’s first Siren from Marion for the price of $50.

Fairville’s original territory was a 3-mile radius which had 100 residents and 150 homes.
